I remember doing this long ago - advantages and disadvantages?

After Windows 7 it does it automagically and if you have an SSD I think it says don’t.

Lol, Hard drives? What hard drives?

Holy crap, that takes me back.

I haven’t seen that screen it a long time. I used to find it absolutely mesmerizing. So satisfying to watch...

But... SSD.

SSD MASTER RACE
but I still use larger HDs for storing data and just put OS + programs on SSDs

you turn my floppy disk into a solid state

Advantages was that it would make it faster to access files on the HD... the disadvantage is that it would usually take a while

Better yet, set them to do it automatically once a week or so. Then you don’t have to ever worry about it.

As hard drives fill up, operating systems might split files into fragments and put them in different physical locations on the disk wherever there’s free space. Defragmenting rearranges everything so that files are contiguous which can reduce the amount of time needed to access them.
I think modern operating systems defragment as they go but on older computers you had manually run a program to do it and it took forever.
It’s more or less irrelevant on modern solid state drives

I desperately need a new SSD, my 120 GB is completely full. My 3TB HD has plenty of room though.
(looks at newegg)
Oh no...

Does your machine have an M.2 slot?

I’ve got a 3 or so year old Mac Mini - should I bother?

Make sure to delete your swap file so you don’t have all those unmovable blocks.

I’ll take one, thank you.

I don’t even know, was just joking. I’ll just buy a regular 512 SSD.

I use my SSD for the OS and other essentials, but I have everything else run off of a regular HD. I'm sure this'll change in the coming years as SSD prices fall.

I do the same, but my 120GB is full now.

It’s still a little pricey to replace my 4TB of spinny things with SSD.

Yes, OSs do this in the background now (maybe not for SSDs, where it would introduce excessive wear), but you shouldn’t have to manually defrag on a modern OS.

You have to get on that pic express/m2/nvme SSd lyfe 10gbps read write.
I use a server array for my mass storage needs.

I have Samsung evos in my Lappy and newer computer. Ol’ spinny just records security camera feeds and has misc storage.
